I think we help patrons by treating them in a way that makes it likely they'll come back to us (or other librarians) for help again, even if our help in a particular situation feels like a waste of time. <br />I believe doctors do sometimes prescribe placebos; I know many used to prescribe antibiotics for viral infections, while knowing that wouldn't help fight the infection.
