Different ways I have been addressed while on the reference desk:
"Ma'am"
"Miss"
"Sir"
"Lil' mama"
"Shawty"
"Girl"
For the record, any of these are preferable to "Do you work here?" and also to patrons who just raise their hands or wordlessly gesture me over as though I am a waiter.
...but not S'am?
ReplyDeleteNah, I haven't succeeded in making that a thing, sadly.
DeleteHow about finger-snapping?
ReplyDeleteOh man! In one of my favorite books, one character replies to another's suggestion by saying "Okay, we'll put it on the list. On a separate piece of paper. That is dragging in a puddle." That's about how I feel finger-snapping ranks on the list of best to worst ways to get my attention.
Delete"Hey, you!" "Library lady!"
